Why is Duterte buying arms from China & Russia? Share the truth

The critics of Duterte which includes the Yellowtards and US based propaganda machines are making it appear as though we are breaking up with the US.

Headlines from US owned Bloomberg's come up with headlines "Duterte Seeks Arms From China, Ends Joint Patrols With U.S." which gives the public the impression that the Philippines is realigning itself with China and Russia when in fact we want an independent foreign policy that is good for the Philippines and not for any other country.

Although there is much to discuss, I will confine myself to why Duterte may have decided to procure arms from China and Russia. Let me just emphasize that these are just my humble opinion.  I am not an expert on these matters and I would gladly to educated by you.

These are the facts:

The Current State of Things

  • The Philippines does not intend to go to war with any country because the US will not help us unless we are invaded.
  • It is useless to buy fighter jets because we cannot use it to attack China or any other country to start a war.
  • If we start a war, the US will not come to our rescue and we will be annihilated by China.
  • China technically invaded us and is occupying the Spratlys but the US did not do a thing to protect us.
  • If we defended the Spratlys and China sank our boats and shot down our planes, the US may still not have come to our rescue unless China declared war.
  • US needs China to let its economy grow.
The Issue: Duterte Seeks Arms From China & Russia
  • US military equipment is expensive. Chinese and Russian military equipment are known to be cheaper.
  • The Philippines does not intend to invade foreign countries so we don't need F16 fighter jets.
  • If we are invaded, the treaty with the US obligates them to fight for us.
  • Why should the Philippines buy fighter jets like F16s from the US when it cannot be used to fight the insurgency?
  • Our war is internal and we don't need expensive US military equipment. Buying military equipment from China and Russia will be cheaper and save our country a lot of money.
The Issue: Ending Joint Patrols With U.S.

  • China is there to stay at the West Philippine Sea and they are going nowhere.  One thing people should understand about Chinese culture is about losing face. Chinese cannot lose face to its own people or to the international community.
  • The US is stuck in the West Philippine Sea because it has to protect American interest and its allies in the region.
  • Knowing that the US and China can't back out of the situation, Duterte decides that by being neutral, they can slugged it out while we watch.
  • If China invades the Philippines, the US has to come to our rescue.
  • By being non-confrontational with China, Duterte can leverage some benefits from them.
  • The US cannot abandon the Philippines even if they dislike Duterte because the Filipinos are their most loyal ally in this region. Besides, Duterte will cease to become a pain in US butt after six years and that is said with fingers crossed.
As I said earlier, I am not an expert so please feel free to educate me because for all I know my premise might wrong.

Please share your thoughts by leaving a comment.

  2. Maybe there are truths to all the points you expressed in this column but i certainly contradict the idea of buying arms from a country who "technically invaded" akready our country and does not respect our sovereignty and the UN Tribunal rulings. If for reasons of buying cheaper weapons is the issue, then why not go to sone other nations like India, Australia and other countries manufacturing weapons? Why really to China? We are hitting our head with our own hammer already.

    1. Its just an option to buy from China. We can buy from any other Country as long as it will be cheaper compared to US. It's just economics. If Russia offers a cheaper alternative than China, we buy from Russia. That is why DU30 said to AFP Generals to canvass weapons from China and Russia. We need modern weapons to fight Local Terrorism, otherwise, our troops are like shooting-targets for the Terrorist.

    3. There are actually good weapons from china. Their anti ship missile is very good and at par with US but much cheaper . We can fit them in our two coast guard cutters. We can also buy mortars and munitions from china. Speaking of Russia, they have one of the best Anti Aircraft like the BUK or S-300, assault rifles, ammo, light tanks and fighter jets like the sukhoi or su-27.

The dnd is just waiting for duterte's signature for buying 100,000 ak 47 to change the low quality m16. We are already aquiring 2 or 4 mi17 or mi24 multi purpose helicopters. Duterte is also planning to buy 5000 russian made jets soon. But he will prioritize the naval force and the army. For internal security.

    3. Agree in your assessment except one about military capability build up. The Philippines needs to strengthen its military's Sea Air Land capability. Other countries will never respect us without these attributes. Nokor although isolated is respected and feared because they have Nuclear and Missile capabilities to deter any agressive stance against their nation. No country on earth can see them eye to eye on their agressive stance in the Korean peninsula. US Russia and China can do is complain. We have more benefit if we improve our relationship with these nations. US will always be our ally but seeking to improve relations with Russia and China will bring us more stability as far as the issue with Spratlys is concerned.

  10. In the past Korea was inbetween China and Japan and there was a saying among koreans "we are the small fish caught inbetween 2 whales that are fighting for territory." For so long any small country is in the ring area of these 2 superpowers it shall be always be the collateral damage when they start slugging it out.The sad fact is that 1 has now established its presence in our teritorial waters, and its not going anywhere just like the proffesional sqautters in our cities. They'll fight tooth and nail.As you can see even the Hague isn't even recognized for its ruling. As for buying war material it is cheaper still are these equiptment relaible when the time comes it has to be used in purpose? As for our former benefactor;stop giving us hand-me-down equiptment their hard enough to maintain in service what more of in spare parts which are even harder to find in the arms market.

  11. We Need Fighter Jets, Not to Invade Countries, But to Defend the Country from Invaders (China), Invaders has Fighter Jets and We Don't. They Will turn Metro Manila into an Inferno if the Country has nothing to fight them. And Why Would we Buy Cheap Weapons? 13. The treaty with the US is not even worth the paper it is written. You already said and I agree that China has already invaded us when they occupied the Spratleys. Altthough I have to say that the EEZ is not territorial waters as per UNCLOS definition.

Secondly. China does not need the Philippines politically unless it wants to subjugate Filipinos and send them as war prisoners to serve as maids and janitors for their local population.

Thirdly, should China war on the Philippines, it can unleash its missiles from the southern edge of China to rain down on the country long before the US can react to defend the Philippines which, by the time the US congress ratifies a war declaration on China, would mostly likely have been obliterated from the map already.

  15. If you read history, China has never invaded a country (by war or killing) but instead colonize them and perform trading since old times until now.

The USA in another hand, is the invader and go to countries to create war and kill civilians people to gain control. It's a multi-billion dollar business selling war equipment.

If you look at closely after 9/11 attack, America has gain a lot of military bases around the world. Most of them are strategically located to infiltrate China.

The west Philippine issue, Obviously China's interest here is not oil, that is what they make us believe. China has built Islands to extend its territory to protect themselves because the US obviously starts to gain control in the West Philippine sea and getting closer to China.
If the US can operate a base in this area, it is very easy for US to launch any rocket and would be quiet difficult for China to defend themselves. The Philippines here is only the casualty.

Look at what happen to Nepal, China did exactly the same thing what happen to West Philippine sea. It has to control Nepal in order to protect themselves from India.
And the same what happen in Japan, etc...

    Would China attack Philippines?

Technically, no. Why would they? In the last 50 years did you see China wage war against another country like the US did in the last 10 years?

If they would indeed attack Philippines, it will only take them 1-3 days to gain control. If they bomb Manila or go invade it, the entire country will be paralized.

So before you believe anything online, Please read history!

Furthermore, Chinese weapons, albeit the affordability, will subject vulnerability on our part considering that they can sabotage it or bugged it with systems that hamper our defense infrastructure. Hence, the analysis given here is farce.

    1. The arms we'll be buying from China will be a non-factor, insignificant, if war ever breaks out. Bottom line, we're never going to war against China, ever. We don't stand a chance, and PRRD recognizes this. China/Russia has nothing to lose and all to gain by selling us arms.

      Delete
  17. Technically speaking US made arms is more reliable in comparison to other countries like China and Russia. It has been proven even if we compare it with "European manufacture's" US made are still at its bests. That is the main reason why they are so expensive, they study their products and not just copy it from the other country. And also, technical manuals of products coming from the US is written in English whilsts products from China and Russia is mostly written on their language (so better study to write and speak Manadarin and Russian)

  18. Buying military hardwares from China and at the same letting them remain at the Spratleys to expand their artificial base is clearly poor judgment on the part of Pres. Duterte...I wonder if he's getting proper advise, or there maybe a Chinese mole already in our govt that's now at work...Folks, the Chinese gov't is very sneaky and if you're caught in their trap you'll have a big problem, the country will have a huge problem and the people will suffer...I believe China has already set their eyes on enticing the Philippine govt officials for any deal by using the "weapon" of evil...Study in your thought how did the drug trade came about that the past administrations had overlooked, if it was indeed overlooked, or they were probably complicit in the drug trade that it mushroomed to a point that it now became a huge problem of the current administration...According to the news the drug lords are Chinese...How did they come to operate in the country like a free licensed enterprise with gov't officials providing protection in return for the "weapon" of evil that already made them millionaires...Did those Chinese drug lords received financial support from the Chinese govt through their Chinese Chamber of Commerce? Folks the Chinese Chambers of Commerce should be investigated for any possible funding from it...There's nothing to lose by investigating any financial institutions in the country...Something unexpected may turn out...

  19. It's common knowledge that anyone and everyone in the country can be bribed and bought. Many officials in and out of the government are already on their payroll. Technically speaking the reason why China built those structures on the Spratley groups of islands and Scarborough Shoal is that they have already paid for them to the three previous administrations. Starting with the Estrada administration. Notice that it was Estrada and dozens of our honorable senators who evicted the US military bases out of the country. Those US bases were our only security against Chinese expansionism for a century. When the US left it was the time the Chinese made their move to slowly occupy those group of islands in the Spratleys and Scarlborogh Shoals. For sure their we're back door deals between some government officials and agents of the Chinese governments to undermine the deal. It's common knowledge that the country is flooded with Chinese agents and spies prowling the country. China economy now is doing well and use these leverage to buy their way into its neighboring countries for influence. With their massive industrial hunger for food for 1.5 billion population, raw materials and natural resources to sustain their growth they need averytning they can get their hands on from everywhere and anywhere. This is now a matter of survival for a very hungry nation like China with a huge appetite for food and raw materials and natural resources. They have to compete with every nation on this planet for everything that they need to sustain and survive as a thriving powerful economy. By hook or by crook they have to survive.

  20. So your saying that the use of supersonic aircraft is useless in internal insurgency? Well i guess i troops have to rely on inaccurate artillery fire not to mention unguided bombs oh and air to ground missiles, lets be real here WHAT IF our territory is being invaded by sea or air what do we do? Use helicopters!? The point is bying supersonic aircraft is nit meant to start a war its for using it to defense not offense plus f16 or FA-50 in this situation would be great for accurate and fast airsupports plus not only these are good in air but by sea aswell targeting boats and intercepting aircraft, but hey just my opinion

    1. supersonic planes are not practical in fighting local insurgency. one of its shortcomings is its inability to loiter at a designated area especially in support of ground troops. an attack helicopter, like the a64 apache, with night vision capability would be more effective and downright terrifying when employed against lawless elements.

      Delete
    2. I think A-10 Warthog is best aircraft for fighting local insurgency. It is a close air support attack aircraft with a 30mm Gatling gun, rocket pods and mounts for missile and bombs. Much cheaper from F16 and Apaches but also a reliable aircraft. We already acquired 1 squadron of F-50 from S.Korea to patrol and defend our airspace. USAF plans to replace it with F32 why not acquire a squadron of A-10?

Now 2016 all we got from them are small aids and outdated weapons. They gave us world war II warship which by now are about 70 years old ship.
