If Ramos wanted to help Duterte, why did he embarrass the President publicly? ~Share

The first critical comment former President Fidel V. Ramos (FVR) uttered against Duterte was when he said that the Philippines was "losing badly" in the first 100 days of President Rodrigo Duterte in office.

Ramos also said in a column published in the Manila Bulletin that Duterte "...is a huge disappointment and let-down to many of us,"

Then on October 11, 2016, Ramos said Duterte has yet to present a long-term strategic vision for the Philippines.  He said, "First of all, [there is] the lack of, or small presence, call it, of long term strategic vision which in my own modest words, I say should be our purpose of whatever age we might be - that is, simply, a better future for the Philippines and all Filipinos. Strategic in the sense that you don’t accomplish that in six years, but targeted towards your children and my grandchildren,”.

Referring to the Bud Dajo massacre of Moros in Sulu by American colonial soldiers; FVR said on October 12, 2016 that "For a leader, I am sorry to tell this: President Duterte, my president, our president, that is 20th-century thinking,"

Not content, FVR went further by criticizing Duterte's for his tirades against the Obama and Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon.

One can't help wonder what FVR's motivation is, if he simply wanted to make constructive criticism, Ramos could have talked to Duterte and tell him what's in his mind.  Instead, the former President made scathing remarks publicly that forced Duterte's communications team to become very defensive.

Duterte often speaks of his respect for Ramos and that is why it is unclear why Ramos chose to criticize Duterte now.

Analysts suggest that Ramos may be putting his foot down to salvage ties with the United States frayed by Duterte’s almost daily barrage of expletive-laced insults.

For those who are not familiar with Fidel V. Ramos, he was a former police general and later became president from 1992 to 1998.

The former president was one of those who led a US-backed popular revolt that ousted dictator Ferdinand Marcos in 1986. He is a graduate of West Point, the US Military Academy .
.
.

To the the Communist Party of the Philippines, Ramos is the America's’ “top dog”.  And as far as the leftist are concerned, Ramos is “now set to lead the pack to consolidate the pro-US camp of reactionaries to put greater pressure on the Duterte regime to backtrack on its promotion of an independent foreign policy.”

Noel Medina, a political analyst with the Institute for Political and Electoral Reform, said that Ramos, though pro-US, “is a practical thinker.” “He really thinks Duterte is overdoing his attacks on the West and the US, and that it is unnecessary.”

How will Duterte respond to Ramos' remarks is a matter to be anticipated. If you have noticed, President Duterte has not reacted to FVR's pronouncements and it will be interesting now is how these two chess players will play their game.
